Far North population growth lags QLD average. Townsville losing out

The ABS today released their population estimates for June 30th 2018 for regional areas. Within our region the Local Government Areas have all fared worse that the state average. Of particular interest is the fact that Townsville’s growth came in at just 0.6% for the year (down from +0.9% in ’16/’17) on the back of some sizeable net internal migration. Townsville City Council area lost 1,112 people to internal migration in the year; this was the second largest negative net internal migration in the state, just behind Mackay who lost 1,186 and grew just 0.1% in the year.

Given recent articles in the Cairns Post talking about a regional population of 300,000 by 2030 it’s perhaps worth noting that the broader Cairns region grew by just 0.9% for the year to 252,037 and would need to see that pace accelerate to 1.46% pa for the next 12 years to meet the 300,000 target.

Thanks Pete. That’s interesting. Mareeba is doing reasonably well. Are people making a “tree change” for retirement?

Hard to tell for sure but certainly net internal migration was the biggest positive driver for the Shire, so the tree-changer theory would fit. Cheers Gene.
