Regional Population; Cairns growing at more than twice the pace of Townsville

Today saw the ABS release their regional population estimates for June 2017. When we consider the data at the SA4 level we see that Cairns grew by almost 3,000 people to just above 250,000 in the year from June 2016; that’s a 1.2% increase. Despite the fact that this is slower than the QLD average (+1.6%) it is more than twice the pace at which Townsville is growing.

In the year to June 2017 Townsville grew by just 1,262 at a rate of 0.5%.

Looking into detail at the Local Govt Area level in our region we see annual growth of;

  • Douglas Shire Council +1.6%
  • Cairns Regional Council +1.3%
  • Cassowary Coast Regional Council +1.0%
  • Townsville City Council +0.8%
  • Mareeba Shire Council +0.7%
  • Tablelands Regional Council +0.4%
  • Hinchinbrook Shire Council -0.8%
  • Charters Towers Regional Council -1.0%

    Pete, these numbers seem to correlate neatly with your recent post about a heavy lift in public servant numbers in the Cairns region, could we be seeing a public servant induced population boom in FNQ, one would presume many of the positions in Qld health for example would have been filled by people outside the Cairns region.

    Glen, yes I think that’s a very fair point although I’m not sure I’d describe 1.2% growth as a “boom”…particularly when the state is growing at 1.6%. Thanks for the comment.
