Despite large falls in employment nationally (and to a lesser degree in Queensland), the North of the State appears to have escaped relatively unscathed this month. The Conus/CBC Staff Selection Trend series shows trend employment in Cairns fell 400 (with all the losses coming from part-time positions) while Townsville added 200 (also all full-time).

Across the State Greater Brisbane’s Trend unemployment rate now sits at 5.9% while the Rest of QLD is at 4.8%. In Cairns, despite weak employment growth over the past year, a weakness in participation and a contracting labour force sees the Trend unemployment rate stable at 4.3%. Townsville continues to improveĀ with participation up and the unemployment rate just 4.1%.
