Unemployment rate drops to 4.0% in Cairns

The extended run of positive employment growth in Cairns continued in March. The region has seen an additional 3,800 people employed in the past year. While over the course of the last 12 months we see employment up we should note that there are also fewer people registered as unemployed. Even though population growth in the region has been strong the participation rate has also been relatively strong (although it has now fallen over the year).

More people are entering the labour market and finding work, although the pace has slowed. Employment growth has slowed slightly and now sits at 2.6% pa, which is above the Queensland 2.2% pa and National 2.3% pa rates.

Full-time employment has been particularly strong (+7,700) over the year and is growing at 7.9% pa.
The March Trend unemployment rate has fallen to 4.0% (February was revised down from 4.4% to 4.1%) and is now essentially the same as the State (3.9%) and National (4.0%) levels. The region’s labour market remains robust.
