Cairns Trend employment remains unchanged while Townsville adds another 900

The ABS original regional Labour Force data for June allows us to update our own Conus/CBC Staff Selection Regional Employment Trend & s.a. series. This shows that the solid growth in employment seen across the State (see here for details) last week is reflected in both Greater Brisbane and the Rest of QLD.

Greater Brisbane has added 117,300 to Trend employment over the year with the Rest of QLD adding another 92,000. {Note these Trend figures will not tally precisely with the ABS s.a. data}. The Trend unemployment rate in Greater Brisbane is now 5.8% while it stands at 5.2% in the Rest of QLD.

In our own area Cairns saw Trend employment unchanged for the month, but it remains 2,900 (2.3%) below the level of a year ago and down almost 9,000 from the pre-COVID peak. The Trend unemployment rate sits at just 5.2% (its lowest level since July 2019) due to a decline in participation which sees 5,600 fewer people in the Labour Force than a year ago, and more than 10,000 fewer than in Jan 2020.

Townsville’s recovery has been far stronger with Trend employment up another 900 this month and now up 9,700 (9.0%) for the year. Trend employment now sits 6,500 above the pre-COVID peak and the unemployment rate has fallen to 4.5% despite a very strong bounce in participation. The significant employment gap that had opened between Cairns and Townsville since about 2016 is closing fast!
