The regions which have been doing best, and worst through 2020

We have recently expanded the coverage of our Conus and Conus/CBC Staff Selection Regional Employment Trend data series to include WA and now have regional data for NSW, Victoria, Queensland and WA.

So, with the release of the Dec 2020 data recently, it seemed appropriate to take a look at how all the regional areas in those 4 states had performed over the course of the year. Below is a colour-coded table listing all the regions by their annual rate of Trend employment growth to December 2020.

While Toowoomba comes out on top, the Rest of Queensland sits at 28th place, and Queensland ranks 37th unfortunately Cairns is languishing down at 73rd spot. The heavy reliance of the region on international, rather than domestic, tourism can be seen by the fact that the Gold Coast (15th) and the Sunshine Coast (31st) have done so much better and both recorded positive growth over the year while Cairns fell 5.8%.
