The release of the ABS original regional building approvals data allows us to update our Conus Trend series for April.
Lats week we saw nationwide Trend approvals up 3.9% for the year while Queensland registered a 6.4% decline. Today’s data allows us to see that Greater Brisbane approvals fell 8.7% y/y while those in the Rest of QLD were down 3.4% y/y.
At the regional level Cairns saw approvals register their first year-on-year increase in almost two years and were up 1.1% (albeit from a very lack-lustre level). In Townsville approvals were up 45.9% y/y from the historically low levels seen in early 2019 but remain weak.
The data at Local Government Area level allows us to see that Cairns Regional Council (jncl Douglas Shire) saw a 9.9% increase over the year to 45 approvals; Cassowary Coast Regional Council was down 5.5% to 5 approvals; Tablelands Regional Council (incl Mareeba Shire) was up 1.1% to 14 while Townsville City Council showed an increase of 45.9% to 46.
