Across the major states of Victoria, NSW and Queensland there is an interesting (and worrying) story centred on youth employment.
Only in Victoria do we see Trend* employment growth in the youth cohort (15 to 24 year old) outstripping that of the state as a whole. While Victoria saw Trend employment growth of 3.3% to July, for the youth cohort this was at 5.2% in Greater Melbourne and 8.0% in the Rest of Victoria. This outperformance of the youth sector (and especially in the regions) is very much at odds with the story in NSW and Queensland.
In NSW ABS Trend employment growth was 3.5% but when we consider the youth sector this plummets to declines of 3.0% in Greater Sydney and 4.4% in the Rest of NSW. Queensland fared almost as badly with state-wide growth at 2.1% but the youth cohort registering just 1.5% in Greater Brisbane and a decline of 3.4% in the Rest of QLD.
This underperformance of the youth sector in the Queensland regions becomes a much bigger concern than in the other states when we realise that regional youth employment in Queensland makes up 7.8% of total Trend employment; it accounts for only 3.3% in Victoria and 3.7% in NSW.
