Chinese arrivals decline continues

Today saw the release of the June data for short term arrivals and departures from the ABS. It showe that arrivals (seasonally adjusted) were up 2.7% from this time last year, and up 3.2% for the full 12 months. The Trend data showed a 3.1% increase from last year. Arrivals from China (Trend) fell by 0.6% y/y, which is the fourth consecutive month of declines and takes the annual rate of growth down to just 1.1% (its lowest level since Feb 2010). If we exclude the Chinese market then arrivals were up 3.8% y/y (Trend).

The ABS original data on State of Intended Stay, seen through the lens of the Conus Trend series, shows us that arrivals into Queensland have increased 1.6% y/y easily outstripped by Victoria (+6.1%) and NSW (+3.0%). Queensland’s underperformance in the international tourism market, as evidenced in the latest TRA International Visitor Survey (see here for commentary), continues.
