The Dept of Social Services Jobseekers data for April and May has been released which allows us to estimate our Conus/CBC Staff Selection Trend series from the original, unadjusted data. What it shows us is further falls in the number of people claiming either Newstart or Youth Allowance in the North.
Our Conus/CBC Staff Selection Trend series for the Cairns and Townsville SA4 regions shows Trend Jobseekers in Cairns fell in May to 8,297 (the lowest since Jan 2013 and a decline of 8.5% for the year) while Townsville also saw a fall to 7,131 (the lowest since Apr 2015 and a fall of 6.1% for the year).
If there was any lingering doubt about the strength of the labour market in Cairns at the moment, take a look at the graph below which shows the ‘Trend Jobseeker Rate‘ – those receiving Youth or Newstart Allowance as a percentage of the total Trend Cairns labour force (as per the Conus/CBC Staff Selection Employment Trend). It has fallen to its lowest level in almost 7 years.
Our new Conus Trend data set for all the QLD SA4 regions shows a decline in Greater Brisbane of 8.2% y/y to 42,482,while in the Rest of Queensland we saw a decline of 7.7% y/y to 62,850.
