The latest Dept of Social services data for jobseekers in the Cairns and Townsville regions allows us to update our Conus/CBC Staff Selection Trend Jobseeker data set. This shows a small uptick in the total number of Jobseekers in both regions. Cairns now sits at 8,896 (up from an upwardly revised 8,833) while Townsville is at 7,487 (up from an upwardly revised 7,429).
This would suggest that the headline Conus/CBC Staff Selection Trend unemployment rate in Cairns of 5.0% in Dec is likely to be revised somewhat higher when we get January’s data later this month. As we noted at the time (see here) the decline in the Cairns unemployment rate was due to a drop in participation rather than a surge of new jobs; this data from Dept of Social Services provides further evidence that the Trend unemployment rate is likely sitting closer to 5.5-6.0%. As the chart below makes clear, Trend Jobseekers have been falling steadily for almost 2 years and this latest data may simply be a pause, rather than a reversal, in that Trend.
