Today we saw the release of the regional detail of residential building approvals data and the derived Conus Trend shows us that the regions are doing rather better than Greater Brisbane (although both are trending lower). Across the State approvals were down 12.0% y/y in October but when we look at Greater Brisbane we see a decline of 17.2% while the Rest of Queensland has dropped just 4.3%.
When we break things down even further and consider the Conus Trend at the SA4 level we see Cairns approvals down to 83 (after Sept was revised up to 85) for a 12.2% decline on the year, while in Townsville the dramatic slide continues with the Trend down to 41 (after Sept was revised down to 43) which is now down 41.6% from a year ago.
At the Local Government Area level Cairns Regional Council (including Douglas Shire) has an unchanged Trend of 55 in October (down 12.1% y/y), the Cassowary Coast Regional Council sits at 8 (unchanged for the month and down just 1.2% y/y), Tablelands Regional Council (incl Mareeba Shire) rise slightly to 19 but are down 20.7% y/y while to our south Townsville City Council has fallen to 39 and is down 32.2% y/y.
