Updated regional population data. Cairns thumping Townsville

The ABS today revised their regional population data for 2016 and 2017, so we wanted to update our post from April (see original here) to reflect the revised data.

At the SA4 level Cairns increased from 2016 to 2017 by 3,061 people (or 1.2%). We can dig deeper into the region by considering the data at the LGA level and here we see growth rates of;

  • Yarrabah Aboriginal Council +3.6%
  • Douglas Shire Council +1.6%
  • Cairns Regional Council +1.4%
  • Cassowary Coast Regional Council +1.0%
  • Mareeba Shire Council +0.8%
  • Tablelands Regional Council +0.5%

Digging deeper still, and considering the data at the SA2 level we see that the major mover in Cairns was Trinity Beach & Smithfield +4.2%, while in the Cassowary Coast it was Tully (which incl Tully, Cardwell and Mission Beach) +1.5%.

To our south Townsville SA4 was up 966 people, or +0.6%. At the LGA level we had:

  • Townsville City Council +0.9%
  • Hinchinbrook Shire Council -0.8%
  • Charters Towers Regional Council -1.0%

The major movers at the SA2 level in Townsville were Deeragun +5.2% and Mundingburra -2.1%
