JobSeeker numbers edge up in December, but the trend still appears to be down

The Dept of Social Services data for JobSeekers shows total recipients edged higher in December. The number of those receiving JobSeeker or Youth Allowance (other) payments increased by 1.3% from November to 1.47 million. Our own Conus/CBC Staff Selection Trend, and the ABS labour force survey data for the number unemployed still points to a topping out, although future months could see this revised.

In Queensland the increase was even greater (up 3.3% to 332,658) but here too the Conus/CBC Staff Selection Trend suggests an improving trend is likely still intact.

When we consider the data closer to home we see Cairns SA4 registered a 4.4% increase (to 22,818) while Townsville was also up 4.5% to 16,754. The Trend shows a similar pattern to that seen at the State and National level.
