Regional Building Approvals; the North doing better than most

The release this morning by the ABS of their original regional approvals data for Feb allows us to update our own Conus Trend series. What we see is that, while Trend approvals across QLD fell 3.5% y/y, in Greater Brisbane the decline was just 2.1% with the Rest of Queensland doing worse, down 5.3%.

In our own area we are seeing a slightly more positive picture with the Cairns SA4 region recording a 0.5% y/y lift while Townsville SA4 (from a historically low base) continues to show a sharp rebound up 79.7% y/y.

At the Local Government Area level;

  • Cairns Regional Council (incl Douglas Shire) is at 46 or +3.9% y/y
  • Cassowary Coast Regional Council is 6, +28.4% y/y
  • Tablelands Regional Council (incl Mareeba Shire) is 13, -14.6%
  • Townsville City Council is 51, +84.2%
