The latest data from the Dept of Social Services of the number claiming Youth and Newstart Allowances in the Cairns region (when seen through the lens of the Conus/CBC Staff Selection Jobseeker Trend) suggests that the labour market in the region remains robust. This despite a slight up-tick in the Trend unemployment rate (see here) which has been driven by a strongly improved participation rate.
Trend Jobseekers in Cairns now sit at an almost-7-year low and are down 8.3% y/y. This is broadly inline with Trend employment data which suggests employment growth of about 11% for the year to Sept.
The data for Townsville shows similar declines with Trend Jobseekers now 6.6% lower than a year ago.
