Despite softer labour market, Jobseeker numbers continue to decline

The Dept of Social Services data for Newstart and Youth Allowance recipients in August, released this morning, has allowed us to update our Conus/CBC Staff Selection Jobseeker Trend series for the SA4 regions of Cairns and Townsville. What we see is a continued decline in Trend jobseeker numbers in both regions despite monthly Labour Force data suggesting a slightly softer market in general (see here).

Across the State as a whole the Conus Trend estimates that jobseekers have fallen by 8.8% y/y, althougth this lags the 10.4% reduction seen nationwide. Greater Brisbane (down 8.9%) and the Rest of Queensland (down 8.7%) have seen very similar levels of reductions.

In our own region the Conus/CBC Staff Selection Trend shows Cairns trend jobseekers down 8.7% (to 8,101) in July while Townsville fell rather more slowly at 6.7% (to 6,953).
