The short term Arrivals and Departures data for March show international visitor growth into Australia has slowed further as Chinese visitor numbers slide backwards. The ABS Trend series shows short term international arrivals grew at just 2.2% for the year to March, its slowest pace since Jan 2012. Visitors from China, on the Trend basis, have now fallen for the past 9 consecutive months and the year-on-year growth rate has slowed to just 0.8%.
If we look beyond the Chinese numbers then international visitor growth stands at 2.4% for the year to March, its slowest pace since May 2013. While the Chinese slowdown is certainly having an impact, even ignoring for that, international arrivals growth is now as weak as it has been in almost 6 years.
Fortunately domestic tourism is booming with domestic trips up 8.6% for the year to December 2018 (for more details see our post here).
If we look at the State of Intended Stay data (presented as original, unadjusted data by the ABS) through the lens of the Conus Trend we see Victoria continuing to lead the nation with growth of 8.1% y/y while NSW has fallen slightly (-0.2%) and Queensland has again under-performed the nation at just 1.3% y/y growth.
