Domestic Tourism saves the day for TNQ…again

The (delayed) release of the National Visitor Survey for the Dec 2018 quarter from Tourism Research Australia will ave come as a very welcome Easter present for TTNQ and the industry in the Far North.

While domestic overnight visits were up up 8.6% across the nation, Queensland saw a 10.6% increase with TNQ doing even better at +13.5%. However, even better news comes when we consider the expenditure numbers. Nationally expenditure lifted by 12.7%, Queensland was up 15.6% but TNQ jumped an impressive 16.9% to $2.382 billion.

Day trip expenditure (while a much smaller component) leaped by 61.6% in the year to Dec. This took total domestic expenditure in TNQ to $2.8288 billion; an increase of 22.3% for the year.

As we noted a few weeks ago (see here) the international sector of the market has been doing poorly in TNQ with international expenditure up just 0.2% for the year. However, when we combine both international and domestic expenditures we see a very healthy increase of 15.3% to $3.8998 billion.
