Last weeks Conus/CBC Staff Selection Employment Trend data (see here) for Cairns suggested the labour market had entered a period of stabilisation. Today’s release by the Dept of Social Services of their Jobseeker data appears to confirm that when seen through the lens of the Conus/CBC Staff Selection Jobseeker Trend series.
The original, unadjusted data for Cairns (made up of 5 relevant SA3 areas) shows the number of jobseekers decreased slightly in June (to 9,309) although the Trend edged very slightly higher (to 9,144). In Townsville (made up of the 2 relevant SA3 areas) we saw the original number also fall but here the Trend also dropped (to 7,579) after some upward revisions to previous months.
While this data cannot be directly compared to the monthly Conus/CBC Staff Selection Employment Trend, it is worth noting that we have seen the decline of Trend Jobseeker numbers in Cairns cease, which corresponds to the stabilising of the unemployment rate witnessed in the latest Conus/CBC Staff Selection Employment Trend data.
