Cairns Hospital Expansion: $1 billion tender released, 3,800 construction jobs

The Crisafulli Government released the tender for the head contractor of the Cairns Hospital Expansion on 11 June, advancing a $1 billion-plus program expected to generate around 3,800 construction jobs for Cairns and Far North Queensland. Funded through the fully-funded Hospital Rescue Plan, the project is described by the government as the single biggest health investment in the Far North, and the anchor of a 30-year masterplan for health delivery across the region.

The jobs figure is worth pausing on. Cairns SA4 has around 145,500 people in Trend employment (April 2026). A construction workforce of this scale, even spread across several build years, represents a material injection into a regional labour market where the construction sector has been under pressure: dwelling approval Trend in Cairns has been declining since August 2025, and skilled trades availability has been a persistent constraint. A project of this magnitude will not be fully resourced from the local market; it will draw workers into the region, which has knock-on effects for accommodation, retail, and services demand.

The expansion itself delivers what the region has needed: four new operating theatres, 16 day surgery spaces, 40 overnight beds, and a specialist outpatient department, alongside clinical trials facilities and simulation and training spaces. An independent review of the previous government’s approach found no plan for a surgical centre, no beds funded, and no site or funding for a multi-storey car park. The current masterplan resets those gaps and provides a clearer infrastructure roadmap through to 2056.

The tender closes 6 August 2026, with head contractor appointment expected later this year. For local businesses watching the construction pipeline, procurement activity will flow well before a shovel hits the ground. Watch for sub-contractor tendering rounds in late 2026, and for the labour demand signal to appear in the Online Job Vacancies data for the Cairns SA4 over coming months.
