Data today from the Dept of Social Services shows that the total number of JobSeekers in the Cairns region has fallen in January, after a modest increase at the end of last year. When we consider the original, unadjusted data through the lens of the Conus/CBC Staff Selection Trend we see a reduction of 24.3% y/y. Although this is still well below the post-pandemic highs we are still a long way from returning o the pre-pandemic levels of 2019.
At the national and State level we also see declines with the national Conus Seasonally Adjusted series showing January at the lowest level since March 2020. However, with the number unemployed (according to the latest ASBS Labour Force Survey..see here for details) at very low levels the gap between the ABS unemployed and JobSeekers is still about 300,000 more than it was pre-pandemic.
