Having briefly dipped below 1 million in November today’s JobSeeker data for December shows the trend reversing and the total number claiming benefits back above 1 million (1,028,564). The move is reflected in Queensland where JobSeekers are at their highest level since August (231,231).
In Cairns we also see a pick-up and, when seen through the lens of the Conus/CBC Staff Selection seasonally adjusted series, shows an increase to 18,334 which is 24% below the level of a year ago (this is the smallest y/y decrease in this series since April) compared to decreases of 28.5% across the Rest of QLD and 32.5% in Greater Brisbane.

The apparent disconnect between the number claiming benefits and those counted as unemployed by the ABS (which had been closing since a peak in min-2020) has also reversed its trend as ABS unemployed hits record lows even as JobSeekers climb.
