Despite a slight decline in original JobSeeker numbers in Cairns the Conus/CBC Staff Selection Trend nudges higher in Sept

Data released this morning by the Dept of Social Services shows JobSeeker numbers across the nation fell slightly in Sept although our own Conus/CBC Staff Selection Trend series suggests a slight increase which brings the y/y decline to 33.2% (from 33.3% last month).

In Queensland, again the original data shows a decline (after an increase in Aug) but our Trend series edges slightly higher and is now down 35.2% y/y (-35.5% in Aug).

Similarly in Cairns the original Dept of Social Services data shows a decline (from 16,904 to 16,627) but the Trend series nudges higher (from 16,514 to 16,927).

As is always the case with Trend series, another month of declines such as seen in Sept is likely to cause this apparent turn in the Trend to be revised away. We generally like to see about 3 months of confirming moves in the Trend series before being confident about a reversal, and so far in Cairns we have seen just 2 months of Trend rises after a long period of substantial declines.
