National Land Use and Cover estimates

Yesterday the ABS released their National Land Account experimental estimates. These provide us with a fascinating look at what the land area of Australia looks like from the perspective of land use as well as land cover. Although the data is only up to 2015/16 (and also provides changes since 2010/11) it does paint an interesting picture of Australia and the differences between States and Territories.

If we look at land use first the table below highlights the major land use categories (which account for between 90-98% of all land depending upon State or Territory). We can see that grazing native vegetation is the primary land use across the nation, as well as in NSW, QLD and SA. In Victoria it is grazing modified pastures which accounts for more than 22% of land use with dryland cropping another 20%.

Only in ACT (13.3%) does urban intensive use account for more than 2.5%; and is only 0.34% across the nation as a whole. Nature conservation in Tasmania accounts for 35.7% of use while in ACT has the highest level at 65%.

Land cover is listed for the main categories (accounting for between 96-99% of total) for each State and Territory.
