The Cairns Airport total passenger numbers for May eased a touch from a seasonally very strong March and April (down 1.2% from April). However, as the chart below makes clear, the improving trend is very much in place with the Conus seasonally adjusted series showing a 11.1% increase for the month.
Of course things are far from ‘normal’ with international passengers all but completely absent (there were 211 international passengers out of more than 280,000 in May). Total passengers are still down 51.4% over the course of the past 12 months although by the time we see the June data we would expect the seasonally adjusted numbers to be about 75% of where they were pre-COVID, which is a remarkable turn-around considering that international numbers will still be (largely) restricted to NZ.
