Further evidence out this morning confirms the ongoing improvement in the Cairns labour market. Dept of Social Service jobseeker data has been released for January and this allows us to update our Conus/CBC Staff Selection Trend series (which seasonally adjusts the original Dept data).
This shows Trend Jobseekers fell again in Cairns and now sit at 8,589. Last month’s original estimate suggested a small up-tick in jobseeker numbers in Dec, but this has been revised following this month’s data and we now see a run of consecutive monthly declines stretching back almost 2 years.
To our south Trend jobseekers in Townsville have also declined to now sit at 7,267. However, as the monthly Conus/CBC Staff Selection Employment Trend data shows (details here and here) the issue for Townsville is not so much that unemployment is rising (it isn’t, the number unemployed are falling which today’s data supports) but that employment is falling. Trend employment in Townsville is down more than 5,000 in the past 6 months and has fallen 3,700 since Jan 2018.
