With the ABS regional labour force data, and the Conus/CBC Staff Selection Employment Trend of that data, showing the unemployment situation improving in Cairns over the past few of months it’s no surprise that today’s release from the Dept of Social Services of jobseeker data (and the Conus/CBC Staff Selection Jobseeker Trend derived from that data) also shows improvement this month as well as downward revisions to past months.
The Conus/CBC Staff Selection Jobseeker Trend shows total jobseekers across the Cairns SA4 region (derived from the five SA3 areas of Cairns North, Cairns South, Port Douglas Daintree, Tablelands, Innisfail Cassowary Coast) at 8,879 (down 68). The Trend has now fallen by 863 in the course of the past 12 months. As we noted last month, previous data had been rather surprisingly showing little improvement; today’s data corrects that impression and the revisions to back months confirms the improvement that the monthly Conus/CBC Staff Selection Employment Trend has demonstrated for the past few months.
To our south in the Townsville SA4 region (Townsville and Charters Towers SA3s) the Trend has also dipped by 143 to 7,242 and is now down 557 for the year. Unfortunately, as the Conus/CBC Staff Selection Employment Trend has shown us, this is not being reflected in a decline in the Trend unemployment rate as more people enter the labour force in the region.
