The graph below plots the Conus and ABS Trend series for employment to working population ratios. As we can see, the Trend has been on a steady decline since early 2009 with the gap between Greater Brisbane and the Rest of Queensland staying largely stable. However, Cairns has been highly volatile (as we might expect from such a small data set) but the worry is that the Trend has fallen so dramatically . Although things are better than they were 9 months ago, there is no sign yet of a real pick-up in the ratio to suggest a return to a much healthier labour market in the Far North.
