An interesting report from the Dept of Infrastructure and Regional Development provides data for the year to June 2014 on the performance of our local airlines and airports. Included in the report are details of which airline had the best on-time performance for departures (Qantas and Regional Express) and arrivals (Qantas and Regional Express again); the best airport for being on-time (Newman-departures; Port Hedland- arrivals); and the best routes (Perth to Port Hedland).
Across all airlines and all airports departures were on-time 83.8% of the time and arrivals 81.9%. So how did QLD stack up?
Brisbane departures were on-time 83.8%, arrivals just 77.8%
Cairns departures were on-time 83.7%, arrivals 84.7%
Townsville departures were on-time 83.8%, arrivals 86.8% (which put it at 9th place nationally)
Clearly smaller airports are likely to perform much better (particularly when it comes to arrivals being delayed by air traffic) so the results above perhaps aren’t really a surprise. Townsville had a total of 5,441 arrivals in the year while Cairns saw nearly double that at 9,959.
