Cairns Trend Employment

The extended run of positive employment growth in Cairns continues this month with another 200 added.

The region has now seen an additional 4,800 people employed in the past year. Again, this month we see the increase all coming from full-time positions. While over the course of the last 12 months we see employment up 4,800 we should note that there are also fewer people registered as unemployed. Even though population growth in the region has been strong the participation rate has also been strong and it remains very close to 14-year highs. Many more people are entering the labour market and finding work, and this has seen the unemployment rate continue to decline.

Employment growth has slowed slightly and now sits at 3.4% pa (which is below State 3.5% but above National 3.0% rates).

The January Trend unemployment rate is stable at 4.2% (December was revised up from 4.1%) which remains slightly higher than the State (3.9%) and National (4.0%) levels. The underlying picture is still one of a general strength. The fact that over the past 12 months we have seen an additional 8,100 full-time positions (while part-time positions are down 3,300) supports this view of a strong labour market.
