International Arrivals continue to grow strongly

Data this morning from the ABS shows short term arrivals in March hit a new record monthly high of 666,000 (seasonally adjusted). This translates to 8.1% higher than at the same time last year. The total arrivals for the past 12 months (7.6 million, and a new record high) is also 8.1% higher than at the same time in 2015.

Arrivals from China continue to grow, up 23.6% for the total over the past 12 months (both seasonally adjusted and Trend). However, the monthly Trend data did show a slight contraction from the previous months; this is likely to be related to the issues around the seasonal adjustment of the Chinese data to account for the vagaries of the Chinese New Year. Over the course of the past 12 months seasonally adjusted arrivals have been almost 1.1 million and accounted for 14.4% of all arrivals (another new record).

Departures also increased, albeit at a slower pace (+5.2% from a year ago and just +3.4% for the annual total).
