ABS Short Term Arrivals and Departures for Sept show arrivals increased by 5.7% from a year ago (the total for the past 12 months are up 8.1% from the same period a year ago). Chinese arrivals have continued to grow strongly and are up 13.4% from a year ago (and up 11.8% for the total of the past 12 months). The Trend data show Chinese arrivals up 24.6% from a year ago (its fastest rate in almost 4 years).
Meanwhile departures growth has slowed and are up just 1.1% from a year ago and the total for the past 12 months up just 5.2% (which is its lowest rate of growth since June 2013).
UPDATE: Loose Change has an excellent post on how News Ltd and certain tourism bodies appear to be mis-representing this data to suggest that the Chinese tourism boom is starting to unwind. We made similar points our self via a comment on the online Cairns Post story…which they omitted to publish.

Those Chinese numbers have been very strong in recent months. This time last year there was a downward blip following the regulatory changes on package tours in China so it will be interesting to watch how that plays out also with growth rates in the next few months. Lets hope the ABS have their seasonal adjustments sorted!

That’s a good point Mark. Those regulatory changes appear to have had only a minor short term impact. You would hope that an impact which had only an one-off impact like that would not have thrown the ABS seasonal adjustment off…..but who knows?!
