No joy from regional building approvals data for the North

The release today by the ABS of the original, regional building approvals data allows us to update our Conus Trend series for the SA4 regions of Queensland as well as the LGAs in the North.

Last week’s release showed Trend approvals in Queensland down 7.7% for the year. Today’s data lets us see that Greater Brisbane approvals were donw 7.0% for the year to Dec while in the Rest of QLD the decline was somewhat greater at 8.6%.

When we look to the North we see Cairns SA4 with Trend approvals at 68 (down from 69 in Nov) which is 5.8% down for the year. Townsville SA4 was unchanged at 44 which represents a 34.0% increase for the year (albeit from a historically low base).

The LGA data allows us to look at greater detail in our won region. For Dec Trend approvals (with yr/yr changes) are;

Cairns Regional Council (incl Douglas) 48 (-3.1%)
Cassowary Coast 5 (-6.5%)
Tablelands (incl Mareeba) 12 (-25.4%)
Townsville City 39 (+43.5%)
