Cairns Trend unemployment rate at just 4.0% in December

Regional ABS Labour Force data, when seen through the lens of the Conus/CBC Staff Selection Trend & s.a. series, shows Cairns having gained 5,500 jobs over the course of the year to December (although this remains more than 4,000 below the employment level of Feb 2020). Even with participation picking up slightly, but down more than 3 ppts from pre-pandemic levels, this sees the Trend unemployment rate at just 4.0% (seasonally adjusted 3.4%).

At the State level, where employment is up about 90,000 for the year, all (and then some) of those gains have been driven by full-time positions (+100,500) but in Cairns only 3,500 of the new positions are full-time with the remaining 2,000 part-time.
