The Google Mobility data allows us to see how various regions have been performing based on how much people have been moving around (with their mobile phones). The latest data up to 2nd April shows that Cairns has been doing particularly well and the 2-and-a-half day Brisbane lock-down appears to have had no impact on Cairns’ pre-Easter build-up.
While Brisbane saw a marked decline in mobility (as seen in our 7-day average ‘Economic Mobility’ measure) with a 11 ppts drop in the index in the four days from 29th March, Cairns saw a solid 3 ppts increase in the same period and now sits well above the Gold and Sunshine Coasts. Data over the next few weeks will provide us with a better picture of how the various regions performed during the Easter holidays.
