Latest data from the Dept. of Social Services shows that the number claiming JobSeeker or Youth Allowance (other) payments have fallen by 2.9% in November. This brings the total receiving the payments to 1,454,869, which is down 11.0% from the May highs.
Numbers in Queensland fell at a similar pace in November (down 2.8% to 322,136) although this represents a 15.2% decline from May. Greater Brisbane has now fallen 14.7% and Rest of Queensland 15.6% from the highs of May.
In Cairns the improvement in November was somewhat less than nationally (down 1.9% to 21,856) but this was due in large part to the fact that JobSeeker numbers had already fallen sharply and are now down 16.1% from the May high. In Townsville, where the ramp up was much less pronounced than in Cairns, the recovery has also been more muted; down 1.8% in November and now 13.2% below May highs.
