Jobseeker Trend remains stable in Cairns

With the ABS regional labour force data, and the Conus/CBC Staff Selection Trend of that data, showing the unemployment situation improving slightly in Cairns over the past couple of months it’s a little surprising that today’s Trend analysis of the July Jobseeker data from the Dept of Social Services shows no sign of similar improvement.

The Conus/CBC Staff Selection Jobseeker Trend shows total jobseekers across the Cairns SA4 region (derived from the five SA3 areas of Cairns North, Cairns South, Port Douglas Daintree, Tablelands, Innisfail Cassowary Coast)  at 9,163 (up just 20).  The original, unadjusted data has actually shown some improvement over the past few months but the seasonal adjustment of that original data appears to have negated much of that when it comes to the Trend. If we see further declines in coming months we would expect not only the Trend to move lower, but also to see some downward revisions in back months. The change in reporting methodology in July 2017 (see notes in the chart below for details) might well be distorting the seasonal adjustment somewhat and we would hope to see this effect washing out in coming months.

It’s a similar picture to our south in the Townsville SA4 region (Townsville and Charters Towers SA3s) where the Trend dipped very slightly (by 31) to 7,599.
