Today saw the handing down of the Cassowary Coast Regional Council’s 2016/17 $74.4 million Budget, the first under the newly elected Council.
The headline increase in general rates is 1.95% which is the lowest since amalgamation (last year was +2.95%). With increases in charges the average increase to rates and charges will be 2.21%. Full details are not yet available from the Council but we will be posting a more detailed review when they are.
Media releases from CCRC Â suggest that a new Rates Reference Group will be established in Sept/Oct with a full report to Council by March next year. A previous Rates Reference Group (on which we sat) back in 2008/09 made a series of recommendations to CCRC all of which were eventually actioned. We certainly welcome the establishment of a new group given changes to the rateable value and demographic structure of the CCRC rates base since that time.
There are also moves being made towards introducing a single water charge across the entire region over the next 4+ years (at present there are two, one in the north and one in the south).
