Cairns “older” cohort losing jobs

In response to comment by a reader, I have taken a look at the “older” cohort of workers in the Cairns region. The ABS provide regional data from the groups from 45 years and over, so this is what I have used to create the new Conus Cairns Older Trend.

As the charts below make clear, the employment situation for this group has been declining for 12 months with the total number in Trend Employment having fallen by 6,400. Over the same period the Trend Unemployment Rate has risen from 3.1% to 6.8% (at the same time the overall Trend Unemployment Rate in Cairns has gone from 7.9% to 8.3% while Youth Trend Unemployment Rate has gone from 23.4% to 17.4%). We must stress that when we consider these sub-sets of regional data we need to proceed with extreme caution given their small size. However, the Trend does appear clear (even if the absolute level of some numbers needs to be taken with a pinch of salt). As my reader suggested, there would appear to be scope for some focus on the labour market conditions for the older cohort in Cairns.
