As we noted last month (see here) the situation for youth unemployment in Cairns has been showing slow but steady improvements. That trend has continued in April. The headline (absurdly volatile) unemployment rate for people aged 15 to 24 has fallen to 18.1% (from 20.8%). The Brotherhood of St Laurence’s preferred measure (12 month moving average) remains unchanged at 21.8%, but our own Conus Trend series (and the measure we would suggest should be preferred) has fallen to 19.4% (from a slightly upwardly revised 20.4% in March). This clearly remains too high, but is a major improvement from the previous high of 26.8% seen in July last year.
